Depending on the material used, a totem pole is carved with a knife, an axe, a hammer and a chisel. Some other tools are used in some cultures, for example to smooth down the stone on rock-based poles. It takes a lot of skill and patience, because one slip can cause the whole artwork to be ruined.

Many civilisations have practised totem pole crafting, such as the Mayans, the Maori, the Native Americans/Canadians, the Ancient Chinese and so on.

The Native Americans tend to be the civilisation most known for their totem poles, but they were certainly not the first to craft them, nor are they the most impressive.

I would have to say the most impressive totem poles are those crafted by the Mayans. Bear in mind they somehow had to travel through thick rainforests teeming with predators with a huge chunk of stone. And then they had to use primitive tools to craft the stone into a beautiful artwork.
