Spanish Colony
The Spanish called the new colony they established on the site of Tenochtitlan "Mexico City" after conquering the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century.
They didn't. In fact, they founded the capital of their new colony (New Spain) on the site of former Tenochtitlan. Such city is present-day Mexico City.
They didn't build a colony there. If they had it 'wouldn't be a historical site today.
Both are one and the same. The city of Tenochtitlan was founded on March 13, 1325 by the Aztec civilization. On August 13 of 1521 they were conquered by Spanish conquistadores led by Hernan Cortes. They found the capital of their new colony on the site of ancient Tenochtitlan. By 1821, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the capital of the former colony came to be known as Mexico City.

First off it's Tenochtitlan. Secondly, it was in Mexico because of a prophecy. The prophecy was that when they (The Aztecs) found an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in it's talon that they would settle there.
Mexico City is the site of the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The Spanish conquistadors conquered Tenochtitlan in 1521 and built Mexico City over the ruins of the Aztec capital. Today, Mexico City is the capital and largest city of Mexico.

Tenochtitlan is a city-state located in Mexico and is the former capital of the Aztec Empire. There seems to be some uncertainty amongst etymologists as to the meaning of the word but it seems to approximate to "At the Place Near Rock-cactus-Fruit".
