Or I could have it backwards. Pretty sure I've heard it both ways, come to think of it. Maybe it's meaningless - although the left-handed cat might be able to drink more sake...

Other than that, the cat symbolism in Japan (as represented by anime such as Detective Conan and Bleach) seems to be the same as in Western cultures. But as my experience is limited, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, a cat is a very cute creature, and those who worship cuteness love cats for that - take Sanrio's Hello Kitty, for instance. But this isn't solely Japanese... after all, who doesn't say "how cu~te" when looking at a kitten?
