In the Natick language used by the Wampanoag tribe, the word wompanniyeu means "in the east"; in Algonkin the word wabanong means "east"; in the Lenape (Delaware) language, wapaneu means "east"; Cree wapun means it is daylight.

The word was originally wampanawag, meaning "people in the east", or "dawn people".

The Wampanoag were a Native American tribe living in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well as current day Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the Elizabeth Islands, in the 1600s when the religious separatists now known as The Pilgrims, arrived and began to build what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. Their descendants still live in this region and are again recognized as a Tribe by the government.

Squanto was a Wampanoag who had been captured, sold into slavery in Spain and later returned to his homeland. He acted as translator and intermediary between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag leaders.

Wampanoag leaders in the 1600s included:

• Massasoit, Wampanag chief who first met the English;
• Massasoit's oldest son Wamsutta (known by the English as King Alexander) who died under mysterious circumstances after visiting with English colonial administrators in Plymouth;
• His second son Metacom or Metacomet (King Philip), who initiated the war against the English known as King Philip's War in retaliation for the death of his brother at the hands of the English;
• Sachem Weetamoo of the Pocasset, a woman who supported Metacom and drowned crossing the Taunton River while fleeing the English;
• Sachem Awashonks of the Sakonnet, a woman who at first fought the English but then changed sides; and
• Annawan, a war leader
