Pocahontas or Mataoaka, was the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the Algonquian Indians near Jamestown. She was said to have saved the life of Captain John Smith (1580-1631.) She was later captured by the settlers of Jamestown to use against her father.
While in Jamestown, she became a Christian and changed her name to Rebecca. She married John Rolfe, one of the settlers. In 1616, she went to London with her husband. She met King James I. However she died in 1617 in England.
