The children mostly helped their mothers gather food, and chased after small mammals and goannas. It was also their job to listen to the stories told them by the elders, and to learn the traditional ways so that these things could be passed on to the next generation. They learnt skills of how to make pannikins, coolamons and other gathering utensils; how to twist animal fur and plant fibres to make ropes; how to cut the bark from trees to make humpies or canoes; all the things needed to survive in their area.
