You can argue about this one for hours. The Maine is one of those rivers which has no source, in that it's just a fusion of tributaries. Three rivers; Mayenne, Sarthe and Loir, come together just north of Angers. The combined watercourse is called the Maine. After 12 km, it flows into the Loire. So, you can say 12km. Or, if you think the river is Maine+Mayenne, 53km. But if it's Maine+Loir, .... Incidentally, it's LE Maine. There's another river called LA Maine in the Vendée.
