What type of clothes did the Navajo use?

The Navajo Indians dressed in deerskin early on. Both the men and women used deerskin for clothing. They later wore cotton clothing, moccasins, and velvets.

The clothing of Navajo people has changed over time. Today, except for certain special occasions, most of the 300,000 tribal members dress in everyday western American clothing. Those that live on the Navajo Nation, becuse it is very rural, the men tend to dress in jeans, boots and western shirt. They were jewerlry for special occasions. Older traditional men where theri hair tied back in a traditional bun to honor Changing Woman. Women for special occasions or if they are older and traditional wear tiered long satin or cotton skirts, and velveteen tops, jewelery and their hair the same way as men.

This way of dates to the 1870s. Grils for coming of age ceremonies dress an older way. They wear a dress made out of a traditional handwoven blanket . It is sort of like a long fitted poncho sewn on both sides with a hole for arms and head and belted with a woven sash. Her hair is worn in a loose pony tail. she wears leggings to the knee and high topped mocosins.

In the early 19th century men worn pants that sort of looked like loose, below the knee, calf length cotton pajamas. They also often wore cloth headbands, later big hats were popular.
