Hippies mostly like anyone with wild hair or clothes, a holdover from the 60's. Natural look was still in for blacks in the seventies as well as the "militant" look. Essentially meaning wearing a beret and military gear and advocating social changes. Some of the coolest anti establishment figures of this era were black and the bigger the "fro" the more anti establishment you were supposed to be. Link on Mod Squad became a hero for many whites as well as Greg Morris on Mission Impossible, although he did not have a big fro, the best episodes were where barney tried to mimic a ghetto black and was completely unconvincing. Although Barney was black he couldn't play certain black stereotype-a sign of how far we had come. Many sent letters and commented with surprise when a plot point referenced his race-they had actually forgotten he was black. In the seventies black was in so whites like Mike Brady on the Brady bunch all got perms so they could have afros too something the producers thought would soften his look and although not called an afro on whites it looked the same and was accepted because blacks paved the way and broke down some of those barriers .
