The Moluccas were known as the "Spice Islands" to Europeans due to the islands' abundant supply of valuable spices like nutmeg, cloves, and mace. These spices were highly sought after in Europe and played a key role in driving European exploration and trade in the region during the Age of Discovery.

The Spice Islands, also known as the Moluccas, were discovered by Europeans during the Age of Exploration in the early 16th century. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in the area in search of valuable spices such as nutmeg and cloves.
The Moluccas, or Maluku islands of Indonesia, are now two provinces. The capital of North Maluku is Sofifi. The capital of Maluku (south) is Ambon. (on Ambon island)
