Kayasthas belong to Brahmin and Kshatriya Both. Kayasthas are Direct Descendants of Lord Chitragupta But, Patna High Court stated "Kayasthas are Kshatriyas" In 1926. That was the Recent Case. 10 years back, in 1916 Calcutta high court classified kayasthas as shudras. But, Patna High Court Reversed The Calcutta high court's Case in 1926 and Stated Kayasthas as Kshatriyas. According to Vyoma Samhita, Kayasthas are Brahmkshatriya. Their are 3 Main Subgroups of Kayasthas Namely-

Bengali Kayastha:-

Bengali Kayasthas and Nagar Brahmins were Priests in Alpines(High land). Bengali Kayasthas are Putative Kshatriya, But mostly Brahmims.

Surnames: Bose/Basu, Ghosh, Das, Dey/De, Nandi/Nandy, Dutta/Datta, Guha, Mitra, Sinha, etc...

Notable People:- Swami Vivekanadan, Shubhash Chandra Bose, Jagadish Chandra Basu, Srila Prabhupada etc...

Chandraseniya Prabhu Kayastha:-

Mostly Found in Maharashtra Konkan Region. They have Right to Study Vedas and Perform Vedic Rituals with Brahmins. They claim their Descendant as Chandrasen.

Surnames:- Thackrey, Deshpande etc..

Notable People:- Baji Prabhu Deshpande, Murarbaji Deshpande etc..

Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha:-

They mostly found in North India(Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi etc..)

Surnames:-Saxena, Bhatnagar, Sinha, Bachchan, etc..

Notable People:-Suratha(King Suratha started Durga Puja), Amitah Bachchan, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dr. Rajendra Prasad(First President of India), Shriya Saran, Lalitaditya Muktapid etc...
