In 1803 Clark received a letter from Meriwether Lewis, inviting him to help lead an expedition of the territories west of the Mississippi River.
Well they hired her husband to translate and they took her along too.
To protect and translate between Lewis and Clark and the Indians they encountered on the way West

What happen was she was captured by a group of Minetarees at the age of 12. and sold at 13. then she was bought by a Russian fur trader named Charboneau, she was then asked to be married. then Lewis and Clark came Charboneau asked them if he could translate that's when Sacajawea joined the expedition.
Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr is the grandson of William Clark. His father was William Clark's son Meriwether Lewis Clark, Sr. William Clark had named his son after his friend Meriwether Lewis.
Sacagawea went with Lewis and Clark. she was invaluable to the explorers because she could translate for them in dealings with the Shoshones, whose land the expedition passed through.
Lewis and Clark's full names are Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Their famous journey lasted from 1804 until the fall of 1806.
Meriwether Lewis was in charge and William Clark came as his assistant. But the Lewis And Clark Expedition is still know as The Lewis And Clark Expedition.
Lewis and Clark were the two explorers that led the expedition over the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific.
Because when they stopped and ran into indians they would have her translate for them. So she was pretty much their translator and guider.
