My perspective is that it is due to a combination of factors including both personal and political. On the personal side, one major factor is probably fear of the unknown (personal sense of security). It does bring a feeling of comfort, even if on a superficial level, if you are around people similar to yourself (at least from outside appearance) - suppose this is human nature in a way.

Everyone is an individual anyhow and the groups they decide to closely identify with is their choice. It is more comforting to identify with a group that shares some of your own ideals, values, etc for reasons of acceptance, support, etc...and superficially, probably more comforting to be around those who look somewhat similar. And once someone identifies with a particular group...the person may have have internalized some of the groups ideals which are not their own - this may backfire on the individual and cause some prejudice against other groups due to allegiance or loyalty with their own.

Politically, it is very obvious I believe....members of any one group want their own to be a majority in order to have a "majority vote" to be able to change the make-up of government so that the political figures reflect themselves and initiate or change laws to better support their own group.
