Men wore white wigs in the 17th and 18th centuries primarily as a fashion statement and a symbol of status and sophistication. The trend was popularized by European aristocracy and was often associated with the legal and political elite. Wigs also served practical purposes, such as covering thinning hair and maintaining cleanliness, as bathing was less frequent during that time. Additionally, the white color signified wealth, as it required expensive materials and skilled labor to produce.
Judges in the past wore white wigs as a symbol of authority and impartiality. The tradition dates back to the 17th century, when wigs were fashionable among the upper class. The wigs also helped create a sense of anonymity for judges to make fair and unbiased decisions.
