Chief Joseph refused to sign a new treaty with the American government because he believed it would lead to further loss of land and rights for his people, the Nez Perce. He sought to protect his tribe's sovereignty and preserve their way of life, feeling that the government often broke promises made in previous treaties. Additionally, he was committed to finding a peaceful resolution rather than submitting to what he viewed as unjust demands. His refusal was a stand against the systemic injustices faced by Native Americans during that period.
