The upper class people dressed in fine clothes made of silks, brocades etc. that showed their social status. The more wealthy you were the nicer and less practical your clothes were.

For the lower classes, functionality and cost were taken into account. Their clothes were supposed to last a long time and allow them to do their work more easily.

Women's clothes were supposed to be more modest in keeping with the religious influences of the time. Their dresses were supposed to cover them from their feet to their necks. In some places, it was against the law to go outside bareheaded.

Men's clothes allowed them to move around more easily and take part in the activities common for men at that time.

Interestingly though, all children wore dresses until they were around five. Then the boys started to wear breeches (pants).
