The red neck was the result of the position a person worked in while exposed to the sun. These people were poor and uneducated and were looked down upon in the south being described as white trash. (That is very much the same contempt that people have for trailer trash today). So when it came to a name calling opportunity between north and south, the expression redneck was an insult that was easily understood by any southerner. Redneck is meant to mean poor and uneducated.
