More than half the time it's because of ignorance. Ethinicity can easily be compared to culture or one's distinct background (hispanic/latino), however since ones culture can play a major role in ones life at times people tend to associate more with it and as such identify with it more often. People just need to remember that when others asked them what they are, they are more than likely questioning thier physical characteristics or thier race, in which case you have to be smart and know that ethnicity cannot alter your physical appearnace, so you would respond by saying white, black, asian, or of mixed race as is the case with many hispanics/latinos. Remember ethinicity can change or even disappear but race, unless you are mixed, cannot because you cant change from black to white or asian to black.
