Why is there ethnic conflict between sri lankas two ethnic groups?

A sort of general answer is that when there are two groups which are readily distinguished from each other, the group that enjoys the greater political/economic influence begins to marginalize the other. It happens subtly but tends to gather speed as it goes. Eventually, one group winds up as "second class citizens," if not worse.
