Um, from what i can remember, he inhaled poison during his fight with Sanji on the Baratie, but manages to survive.
After swearing to follow in Don Krieg's footsteps, Gin leaves, carrying Krieg's body.
Thus for all intents and purposes, GIN WAS ALIVE.
However it isn't currently known whether he's still alive, considering he hasn't made an appearance in the anime so far, he's certainly not a very active character in the manga either, but i think it was assumed that he would either meet Luffy and Sanji again on the Grand Line, or Oda (the mangaka) would forget about him as a character =/
