The programs had a life-cycle of close to twenty years. few dogs live more than l3 years, and there were, as explained- several dogs involved, all, except maybe the recent (l993) movie version canines are probably deceased by now. on the other hand no Lassie died as part of the plot ( unlike Old Yeller, for example) this would short-circuit continuity and really wreck the program- like say a regular cast member of Hogan"s Heroes being fatally shot- yet, Lassie had not the slightest traces of comedy or even comic relief. I hated the program and the stage three Lassie- Forest Ranger plot was even dumber, you can"t change a kiddy show to an adult one- it is quite difficult if not impossible as Edith Hamilton explained in her book on Mythology.
