Nobody knows what he died of, but it was probably of an illness of some sort, since he died peacefully at his home on the Far Eastern island of Batavia, in affluent circumstances. He died on 10th October 1659, at the age of 56 - he might have caught a pulmonary illness such as pneumonia, or an epidemic or infection that was going around at the time that 17th Century medical science was unable to treat effectively
