Mother Cabrini, also known as Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini (1850 - 1917) was the first American citizen be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church (1946). She is best known for her work in establishing schools and orphanages. She was assisted by her fellow sisters of the order she founded in 1880, The Missionary Sisters Of The Sacred Of Jesus Christ. Mother Cabrini wanted to work in the missions of China but was directed by the pope to work amongst the poorer classes of America. She died of malaria in 1917.
