Mummification in ancient Egypt differed significantly between the rich and the poor primarily in the quality and extent of the process. Wealthy individuals received elaborate embalming procedures, including the use of costly materials like resin, intricate wrappings, and elaborate tombs filled with valuable goods for the afterlife. In contrast, poorer individuals often underwent simpler methods, such as basic drying and wrapping with minimal materials, and were typically buried in less elaborate graves without accompanying goods. Consequently, the tombs and rituals reflected the social status of the deceased, highlighting the stark disparities in treatment after death.
The full process was only available to the rich. Mummification occurred amongst the poor as they were buried in pits in the desert and the prevailing climactic conditions enabled the process to occur naturally.
