Well, Thanatopsis is a poem about death. Death isn't a very pleasant topic to discuss, in fact, it is one of the more grim. So in an effort to ease the tension perhaps, Bryant chose to write Thanatopsis in free verse form. The free verse form is easier to read is more comfortable. With comfort maybe come trust, as in the reader of the poem to be more willing to the acceptance of death. ok?

The form of rhyme in Thanatopsis is Iambic Pentameter. 'Penta' means five, as in Pentagram, a shape with 5 sides.
