If you are "breaindead" it usually means that your brain has suffered a severe interruption to its oxygen supply for a significant period of time (ie, being under water for a few minutes). This lack of oxygen can cause brain tissue to die.

This is different from being dead, because the body can be resuscitated by CPR and defibrillation to the point where the hurt, lungs, and other organs are functioning normally on their own or with the help of medical equipment. This results in a state where the rest of the physical body is alive but the brain is not functioning normally or at all. The brain usually cannot recover from this state so eventually medical assistance is usually removed and the body is allowed to die.

Braindead is another term for being in a permanent coma, or a PVS, persistent vegetative state.
