Traditionally the bad guy always wears the black hat in westerns. In a contemporary movies, the bad guy has a disgusting habit, perhaps smoking or swearing. In the classic movies, smoking was not considered bad. It wasn't until the middle 1960's that smoking was identified as the hazard it is.
