What did Jesus die from?

Although Jesus was brutally treated by Roman soldiers, nailed to a wooded cross, and left to die this is NOT what Jesus died from.

We read in the good news (Gospels) of the New Testament as recorded by John in John chapter 19 verse 30: When He had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Even the soldiers were surprised that He had died so soon, that they didn't break His legs as was commonly done to hasten death. But they thrust a spear into His side to pierce His heart, thereby proving His death, not causing it, as water and blood flowed out.

Jesus foretold how He would die when He made the following statement as quoted in the Gospel of John chapter 10 verses 17 & 18:

The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again.

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

The big question now becomes, WHY did Jesus lay down His life and take it up again?

This same disciple John wrote later in his book chapter 20 verses 30 & 30:

Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
