In the instance of the book, "Fly Till You Die", at that point in the Korean Conflict there was no criteria set up for rotation to the United States after flying a certain of missions as was done in WWII and so the crews felt helpless and that their chances of staying alive for the 21 months of active duty from the reserves were very slim. Eventually the number was set at something around 70. During the tme the 452nd Bopmb Wing was activated, it flew 18,000 sorties, earned 8 Campaign credits, 2 US Distinguished Unit citations and the Republic of Korea's Presidential Unit Citation. I know, because I was there to be a part of it.
