Eulogist. This should not be confused with the Principal Mourner- normally the closest living relative of the deceased- who follow the casket into the church. I discharged this office at my Mother"s funeral.
It isn"t always done. There might be a blessing at the funeral parlor by a lay funeral home employee- but there is no real space for a eulogy in the requiem mass. The principal mourner, out of tradition, follows the coffin into the church. I performed this office once.
