I can give only a partial answer. Sister Mary Bernard suffered from what was known as a tubercular knee and possibly the upper calf of that leg. I am not sure which knee and leg were diseased. As a girl, known as Bernadette, she suffered from chronic Asthma attacks which were severe enough to send her to bed for long periods of recuperation and at least one trip to live with her aunt/godmother in the country.
What makes the knee/leg diagnosis problematic is the usage of the word tubercular which covered TB and cancer. As an educated guess, Sister Mary Bernard (Bernadette) suffered from bone cancer. This knee ulceration was susceptible to infection, had likely spread, and the wound itself was likely septic.
Complications from the cancerous knee/leg and the infection would have compromised her circulatory system would have contributed to her death.
Bernadette was always sickly as a child. She contracted cholera as a toddler and suffered severe asthma for the rest of her life. She also was struck down with tuberculosis of the bone and this disease eventually was the cause of her death.
She is associated with Lourdes France and it is said her body was dug up some thirty years after her death ,her symbol is Lillies/
