The Maori Queen, Dame Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, has died after a long battle with failing health.
Te Atairangikaahu died at Turangawaewae Marae about 5.30pm on Tuesday, less than a month after her 75th birthday. She had been receiving dialysis at the marae.
She was the sixth leader of Maori kingship, the Kingitanga movement, and was the longest serving monarch in its history. She served for 40 years.
'Kuini' is the Maori transliteration of the English word 'queen'.
