to worship their gods
Yes. The Aztecs did do human sacrifices of their hearts and gave it to their sun of god, Huitzilopochtli.
They usually sacrifice the captives to their gods. They would cut open the chest of the captive and cut their heart out while the captive was still alive, and sacrifice it to the gods. They did this because the Aztecs believed that the gods were best nourished by living hearts of captives.

human hearts and blood
Eww gross, no. They only took out the hearts for sacrifices and gave it to the gods.
The Aztecs sacrificed other human beings hearts, as an offering to the gods for giving the Aztecs the sun. The Aztecs believed that the sun was created by the gods sacrificing themselves to make the sun. So, the Aztecs believe that they have to repay the god with human hearts, or blood.
