Everyone has to face the reality of life, and all of us know we are going to die - someday, somehow. That is why it is so important for people to avoid putting off the submission of their last will and testament. Surely, the last thing you would ever want is for the government to inherit all of your personal belongings and do what they will with those possessions. Typically, people want all of their earthly belongings passed on to their friends and loved ones - not sold to random strangers at some silent government auction.

Thus, how does someone go about the process of filing their last will and testament? First, you will need to decide whether or not you will be filing it on your own or if you will be using the assistance of an attorney. In either case, you will have to follow some basic protocols in writing your will:

#1. First, you must make a full inventory of your possessions.

#2. Create a list on all the items to be discarded after your death, such as vehicles, heirlooms, stocks and bonds, savings accounts and other such assets.

#3. Write down every last means of personal identification that you can think of, including any previous places of residence, home addresses, telephone numbers, bank account numbers and other such classifiers.

#4. If needed, come up with a projected estimate on your belongings.

#5. Find a facilitator for your case. This individual will be directly responsible for your holdings once you’ve died, including such tasks as appropriately disbursing your wishes, belongings and estate(s).

#6. If you have one or more children to consider, take the time to reflect on what each child will or will not be given of your belongings and/or estate. If they are minors, you will have to decide on a guardian for the children, of whom you must acquire full consent from in regard to such responsibility.

#7. Once you have all of this information assembled properly and stated effectively in your will, you must state that you are sound of mind and receive the final approval from the state in which you reside.
