by using a dialindicator
You do not have to check a gear backlash. All you need is a dial indicator to plug in and i will check for you.
To set the backlash on a 1982 Jeep CJ7 rear end gears, first, ensure the differential is clean and properly lubricated. Use a dial indicator to measure the backlash by rotating the pinion gear slightly and noting the movement of the ring gear. The typical backlash specification for CJ7 rear ends is usually between 0.006 to 0.010 inches, but refer to the service manual for exact values. Adjust the ring gear positioning by tightening or loosening the adjusting nuts on the carrier until the desired backlash is achieved.
Offshore cranes generally have a high standard range of backlash. This applies mainly to the slewing gear of these cranes.

To check ring and pinion backlash with a dial indicator, first secure the dial indicator to a stable point on the differential housing, ensuring the probe touches the ring gear tooth. Rotate the ring gear back and forth to find the point of maximum backlash, noting the dial indicator's reading at this point. The measurement should typically be within the specified backlash range for the gear set. Adjust the gears as necessary to achieve the correct backlash if the measurement is outside the acceptable range.
The backlash between the pinion and crown wheel refers to the small amount of clearance or play between these two gears in a differential or other gear system. This clearance is essential to ensure smooth operation and prevent binding during movement. Proper backlash allows for thermal expansion and tolerances in manufacturing, while too much backlash can lead to excessive wear and noise. Adjusting the backlash is crucial for maintaining the performance and longevity of the gear system.
Backlash can be defined as a rotational arc clearance formed between a pair of mounted gears. A backlash (clearance) is crucial to any Gear set for checking the damages caused by the gear tooth interference. Lack of backlash causes the following problems: * Noise * Overloading * Overheating of gears and bearings * Seizing and failure Backlash amount gets measured by limiting the rotation of one member, that generally is the pinion, while measuring the other component's rotational movement at a reference radius. Backlash is usually defined in arc degrees (min/sec). The arc movement measurement thus obtained is converted to degrees by applying the following equation:Backlash (degrees) = Arc Movement (inches) x 57.296/Radius (inches)The following table gives the American Gear Manufacturer's Association specified Backlash range for Coarse pitch Spur, Helical and Herringbone type of gears.
To adjust pinion depth, you typically use shims placed between the pinion gear and the housing. By adding or removing shims, you can raise or lower the pinion, which alters the depth at which the pinion engages the ring gear. It’s crucial to measure the backlash and contact pattern after each adjustment to ensure proper gear alignment and functionality. Always refer to manufacturer specifications for precise measurements during this process.

Check the backlash between the starter drive and the ring gear after installation. If it's too tight, use shims.
