This depends on a lot of things: What kind of feed, size of cow, type of cow, what season, what her physiological and reproductive stages are, etc. As such, this question cannot be answered.

However, the basic rule of thumb is that a cow will eat 2.5% to 5% of her body weight in dry matter per day.

Assuming a 1000 lb cow consumes an average of 2.5% body weight of required food, this equates to roughly 25 lbs of Dry Matter ration per day.

Now assuming this cow is enclosed and is free to roam and eat grass, which is 85% water and thus only 15% dry matter, 25 lbs of dry matter divided by the 15% dry matter in grass equates to roughly 167 lbs of grass per day. That's 1169 lbs of grass that 1000 lb cow consumes in one week (1 week = 7 days)

As mentioned above, there are several factors that affect this amount. As you can see by the equation, the biggest factor affecting intake is body weight. The amount of moisture vs. dryness in the feed also ends up changing the formula by a bunch. Do note, a lactating cow tends to eat 50% more than a dry cow or "normal" bovine.

Why do cows eat 24 hours a day?

This is common misconception that you have started to believe. Cows and cattle do not eat 24 hours a day. They only eat around 16 to 18 hours per day, and spend the rest of the time resting to chew their cud, socializing with other cattle, getting milked (only if they're dairy cows), traveling back and forth to watering holes, etc. Cattle can only eat so much before they're stomachs get full.

Are pigs considered to be cattle?

Pigs and cows are not the same animal at all. Pigs are much smaller than cows and they are omnivores instead of herbivores. They don't have a furry coat and they have tightly curled tails. Cows or cattle are large herbivores with furry coats and long tails that have a tassel at the end. Cattle can also have horns in some breeds.

What drenches do you give cows?

Drenches should ONLY be given to cows that are sick, cannot eat or are bloated. A mineral oil drench is given to cattle that are bloated, and a drench containing electrolytes are given to cattle that have severe diarrhea or at the point where they will not eat. DO NOT give drenches to cattle that do not need it!!!

What time of day do cows eat?

Cattle can eat during all hours of the night and day, since they only sleep a few hours during the day at a time. If the day is hot, they will stay in the shade and only graze during the cool in the morning and evening. If it is cold out, they will eat as much as they will to keep themselves warm then rest and ruminate. Cows that are fed in a barn like most dairy cows will eat when they are fed, pausing to rest and ruminate, then eat again. All cattle are fed ad lib so they eat as much as they want before laying down to chew their cud.
