For starters, let's just say there's a reason people refer to the B complex vitamins.

B12 is involved in several different processes within the body, including the synthesis of DNA and fatty acids. However, one of its major functions is to regenerate folate within the body, and as long as there is sufficient folic acid (vitamin B9) present, many B12 deficiency symptoms will not show up.

There are two major places where adequate folate will not compensate for B12 deficiency, and both of them involve the nervous system... specifically, the myelin sheath around nerve fibers. Ultimately this results in degeneration of the brain and spinal cord. Also, a chemical pathway leading to the synthesis of certain neurotransmitters requires vitamin B12 in order to work properly.
