A herbicide (commonly known as a weedkiller) is a type of pesticide used to kill plants. Some are selective - only affecting certain plants.

Synthetic herbicides tend to imitate plant hormones which interfere with the growth of the plant.

There are also natural herbicides, naturally produced by plants to prevent other plants being too close to them.

Organic Herbicides also exist that are seen to be less harmful to the environment and animals - they include Vinegar, Steam, Salt Water and Spices.

Many herbicides used can have a very harmful effect on the environment and on animals eating plants that have had herbicides used on them. Some have even been found to be Carcinogenic and Toxins.

When a plant population has withstood a herbicide for a long time, it can become resistant to that herbicide.
