Well, cholesterol bio-synthesis is controlled by the regulation of HMG-CoA Reductase. This happens near the beginning of the pathway, so in my opinion would seem to be the key step in the process.
There are actually 5 steps considered to be the bio-synthesis pathway of cholesterol. They all seem to me as important but it's just my opinion.
Hope it helps.
HMG-CoA reductase is an enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis. It converts HMG-CoA to mevalonate, which is a key intermediate in the synthesis of cholesterol and other important molecules in the body. Inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase are commonly used as cholesterol-lowering medications.
Acetyl acetic acid is also known as acetoacetic acid. It is a beta-keto acid and is an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. It is also a key component in the ketone body metabolism pathway.
There is no NADPH+. However, there is NADPH, which is a product of non-cyclic electron flow in the light reactions of photosynthesis. NADP+ and two protons are transformed to NADPH and one proton via NADP+ reductase as the last step in photosystem II.

A diet rich in fruit and vegetables would be the key to bringing down your cholesterol levels. There are even certain fruits, like pomegranate I think that are believed to bring down cholesterol levels.
