People throw up for a wide number of reasons, like eating bad food (food poisioning) a disease (stomach flu), allergic reactions to things, nervousness, motion, eating too much, etc.

Whatever the root cause, throwing up is the body's effort to get rid of something bad that has entered the body before it does more damage.

Besides getting sick from toxins or viruses, some people also throw up from motion sickness. In this case, the signals from the eyes and ears to the brain are different (ex. you are reading in the car, so your eyes sense you are sitting still, but your ear senses you are moving) so the brain becomes confused and sends signals that you are nauseated and (may) need to throw up. In the end, it is still an attempt by the body to protect itself, although it manifests itself in a slightly different way.
