Icthyosaurus died out around 93 million years ago. The cause of their extinction is unknown, but could have been climate change or, less likely, competition from plesiosaurs and mosasaurs.

Henry Hoste Henley, a 19th-century British fossil dealer, generated significant income from selling specimens, including the ichthyosaurus. He is known for selling a notable ichthyosaurus skeleton, which fetched around £2,500 at the time, a substantial sum in the 1820s. This sale contributed to his reputation and financial success in the fossil market.
