How does a dinosaurs hunt?

Most carnivorous dinosaurs dispatched prey using their teeth and jaws. Large types that hunted large prey often had strong arms, which were used to hook onto prey securely, so that they could kill it. Some dinosaurs, such as Troodon and dromaeosaurs, had long, curved claws on their inner toe, which was used to hook onto large prey and maybe even to stab it. They probably relied primarily on their eyesight to find prey, but some, such as Tyrannosaurus, had an acute sense of smell.

Tyrannosaurus Rex may have hunted in several ways. Note the emphasis of the word 'may'; when studying dinosaurs there are few things that are a certainty regarding behaviour. Jack Horner claims that T-Rex was only a scavenger, I strongly reject this theory.

T-Rex was most likely an ambush predator. Using its large and intelligent brain (the largest brain of all known dinosaurs) it would wait for the right moment to strike. The massive, powerful legs of a Tyrannosaurus suggest it could run at fairly fast speeds (perhaps 20 mph) for a short duration. In an ambush, this would be perfect. One can imagine a T-Rex suddenly bursting out of cover into a herd of herbivores, biting down on one with its massive jaws. Its jaws were immensely powerful, capable of crushing bone. The first bite would probably cripple the dinosaur being hunted.

Jack Horner points out that T-Rex had an amazing sense of smell, which he claims indicates a scavenger (the sense of smell used to discover corpses). I agree with Horner on this one, the T-Rex no doubt used its amazing sense of smell to find carcasses and scavenge. But like most predators, T-Rex did not just scavenge, it was an extraordinarily well-designed carnivore that was the apex of predatory dinosaurs.

The big predators such as tyrannosaurus likely followed the weak in a group or herd and use their powerful jaws to crush bone. Things like utahraptors, volociraptor, and deinonochus stalked and use their jaws, claws and for most raptors a big foot claw used for cutting jugulars.
