In comparison to the age of the Earth, the dinosaurs were relative latecomers. A widely-used example is that if the whole existence of the planet were reduced to a single year, starting (as years do) on January 1, the dinosaurs appeared on Christmas (December 25). On the same scale, people came on the scene a few seconds before midnight, January 31.

In human terms, the dinosaurs were long, long ago, from around 225 to 64 million years before present. When the last dinosaur died, our super-great-grandparents were something like mice.
