Its mostly because of climate change. Example: the sea of Tetis (located where the Sahara stands today) was home for whales and megalodon (the giant shark). When continents shifted, whales moved north and south to colder waters where their food lived. Since whales were megalodon´s prey, and apparently the shark didn´t adapt to colder waters, it went extinct. Same thing could have happened to different species of dinosaurs. Just imagine changing vegetation, different weather, water availability, etc.

What Forces drive the drifting of the continent?

The main force driving the drifting of continents is plate tectonics. This is caused by the movement of the Earth's lithosphere plates over the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. The plates can converge, diverge, or slide past each other, leading to the drifting of continents over long periods of time.

What caused the drifting of the continent?

The causes of the natural disasters and plus the wind could possibly tear the continents and make separate continents. Also there could have been a terrible earthquake that caused the continents to also separate.

Scientist believe that a large asteroid struck earth approximately sixty-five million years ago It is often theorized that the event contributed to the?

mass extinction of the dinosaurs. The impact caused widespread environmental changes, such as cold and darkness due to dust blocking the sun, leading to a disruption in the food chain and ultimately the extinction of many species, including the dinosaurs.

What may have caused the first mass extinction 65 million years ago?

The leading theory for the first mass extinction 65 million years ago is a catastrophic event such as an asteroid impact. This event is believed to have led to environmental changes that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species.

How big was the meteor that was said to have led to the extinction of the dinosaurs?

Although there is much speculation over what actually caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, a large meteor did, in fact, strike the Earth shortly before the dinosaurs' extinction. The meteor is believed to have been approximately 10 kilometers in diameter. The impact location was the Yucatan peninsula and the event occurred around 65 million years ago. If the dating is correct this places the impact during Cretaceous period, which has led many to believe that the impact event triggered or facilitated the extinction of the dinosaurs.

How much the continents are drifting each year?

The continents drift at a rate of about 2 to 5 centimeters per year due to plate tectonics. This movement is caused by the slow motion of Earth's tectonic plates.

Was the extinction of dinosaurs caused by a metoerite crashing to earth?

Most dinosaurs died off about 65 million years ago. Most life on Earth ended 65 million years ago during what is called the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. There is substantial scientific evidence of an asteroid or comet impact on Earth that caused or was the primary contributor to the extinction. A few scientists still hold other views, including a massive eruption of volcanoes. See related links.
