There is really no general consensus among Christians regarding what killed the dinosaurs. A majority of them would just accept the scientific evidence, that 65 million years ago an asteroid hit the Earth of the Yucatan Peninsula, causing climate change and a disruption of the food chain which dinosaurs could not cope with.

Some of them, the fundamentalists, who only interpret the Bible literally, believe that many of the dinosaurs were wiped out by the global Flood. The ones who were supposedly taken on the ark died out shortly after, because it is thought that they could not cope with the "post-flood" environment or were hunted down by humans.

It is a generalisation to say that most Christians believe the theory of an asteroid impact led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Many Christians point to the evidence indicated of a catastrophic event which resulted in mass dinosaur fossil graveyards. Worldwide, there are indications of geography-rearranging forces at work consistent with a worldwide flood, as seen in the numerous layers of water-borne sedimentary layers, hardened by time into rock.

The evidence of rapid burial leads many Christians to believe that the dinosaurs were killed by the flood. These layers contain many fossils, which have been so well preserved that they could only have occurred suddenly, if the living animals had been buried quickly under masses of sediment which prevented exposure to the air . This would result in decomposition or the remains being eaten by scavengers, rather than fossilisation. Patagonia, in South America, is an example of such a site, where masses of fossils have been found together, with the preserved bodies showing no evidence of attack or scavenging by other animals. Even the Scientific American magazine, headed up by secular palaeontologists, has conceded that some of the groups of dinosaurs may have perished in a flood.

Stories through the Middle Ages point to the continued existence of dinosaurs for centuries after the flood. Even though the Middle Ages were indeed seen as a time when superstition was rife, history shows that legends (e.g. dragons) arise out of real events - distorted through time, yes - but with enough basis in fact to warrant consideration. Larger dinosaurs evidently died out, most likely due to climatic changes through the ensuing centuries. New species of mammals continue to be discovered and "rediscovered" after apparent extinction, having hidden in untapped wilderness for years, so it is conceivable, to many Christians, that smaller dinosaurs continued to co-exist with modern animal life forms. It is not only Christians who still hold out hope that other species thought to be extinct may yet remain in hiding.
