Yep. That's what Richard Owens thought they were. As things turned out, they weren't that much like modern lizards after all; some people - mostly country folks - thought the fossilized bones looked like those of giant chickens, but their ideas were ridiculed by the scientists of the day. Well, guess what? Modern scientists have been able to analyze some of the DNA of the dinosaurs and they were more closely related to chickens than to lizards!
I don't think there are any moves underway to change the name to "Dinogalliformes" (terrible chickens), though.
Terrible lizard
The dinosaur who's name means tyrant lizard king is tyrannosaurus rex; tyranno meaning "tyrant", saurus meaning "lizard", and rex meaning "king".
Dinosaur translates to "terrible lizard."
The word "dinosaur" comes from the Greek words "deinos," meaning "terrible" or "fearfully great," and "sauros," meaning "lizard" or "reptile."
It comes from a term in Greek called Dinosauria which means 'terrible lizard'
botanical? that's plants do you mean the genus? that would be difficult. are you referring to a specific dinosaur? timeframe or what?
Dinosaur(*) is a greek word and it comes from the words δεινός (dinos) which means big and terrific and σαύρα(savra) which means lizard and the word is "δεινόσαυρος"(dinosavros)
"Deinos" and "sauros," the root words of dinosaur, are both Greek words. They mean "terrible" and "lizard," respectively.
Dinosaur means "terrible lizard." When people began to study dinosaur bones they thought that they were an extinct species of giant lizards, and judging by the size of them they imagined they would have been quite terrible when they were alive.
Yes, the Greek root word "dino" means "terrible" or "fearfully great," not specifically "lizard." The term "dinosaur" comes from the Greek words "deinos" (meaning terrible) and "sauros" (meaning lizard).
Yes, that would be a reasonable interpretation of the Greek roots of the word. The 'dino' part of the name could mean terrible, potent, or fearfully great.
Dinosaur is made up of two words that come from Greek, the first word is "deinos", which means "terrible" and the second word "sauros" which means "lizard" or "reptile". So together dinosaur means "terrible lizard". Though this name is not entirely accurate since dinosaurs are not lizards.
