Dinosaur comes from the Greek 'deinos' meaning 'terrible', 'powerful' or 'wondrous', and 'saura' meaning 'lizard' or 'reptile'.
It has been common practise to translate dinosaur as terrible lizard.
dinosaur- 1. Any cheifly terrestrial, herbivorous or carnivorous reptile of the extinct orders Saurischia and Ornithischia, from the Mesozoic Era, certain species of which are the largest known land animals.
"Terrible lizard." Sir Richard Owen bestowed that one them back in the Nineteenth Century. It turned out to be somewhat inappropriate in the light of discoveries in the Twentieth and Twenty-first. For one thing, only some dinosaurs were "terrible," and none of them were lizards. (There must have been some sort of "lizard" fad, because another creature was named "King Lizard" which turned out to be a whale.)
Dinosaurs are actually most closely related to birds, and specifically, chickens, but it's unlikely "dinogallus" (Terrible Chicken) will ever catch on.
Dinosaurs were not always mean and those that were were not intentionally mean. Dinosaurs went on instinct so they did not choose what they did. Carnivores("meat eaters") were usually the ones pictured as the mean ones.
