A notable animal from the Mesozoic era is the Shastasaurus, a 69 foot long icthyosaur (fish like marine reptile). It is the largest known marine reptile.
More recently, Columbian mammoths, mastodon, bison, short faced bears, Smilodon, American lions, Dire wolves, giant ground sloths, and Glyptodon lived in California. These animals died out about 10,000 years ago.
