Eragon, Murtagh, Brom, Oromis, and Galbatorix are the ones that are alive in the series. The dragon rider for the last egg is not know, we will find out when the fourth and final book comes out.

Eragon casts a spell (in his mind because he couldn't speak) to have Galbatorix experience all the pain and anguish that dragons and humans had felt since the oldest heart of hearts. The pain was overwhelming, so Galbatorix cast a spell that killed him(self).
