Never ending story.Dragon Riders of Pern
You might be thinking of such stories as 'The Dragon Riders of Pern' where there is a close relationship between humans and Dragons. These are fictional stories. The truth of the matter is, Dragons are solitary creatures who's interactions with Humans are mostly of the abrasive sort. Any interactions people have had with hatchling dragons have been short lived and not entirely pleasent.
The dragon's job is to burn a alien parasite that devours everything, called Thread, from the skies of Pern anytime, the Red Star appears (250 Turn {or Pernese year}, Thread can reach the planet Pern for about 50 Turns). Gold Dragons, usually have the job of breeding, but are also known to carry their flamethrower holding rider through a threadfall, to burn thread that escaped the grasp of the male and green female dragons. Dragons are also used for instant transportation, by method of traveling "Between" Space and Time.
Christopher Paolini's works were strongly influenced by Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series and Anne McCafferey's Dragon Riders of Pern.
In "The Smallest Dragonboy," it is considered an honor to become a dragon rider because it signifies that a person has the courage, skill, and determination to form a strong partnership with a dragon and serve their community in defending against Threadfall. Dragon riders are seen as heroes who play a crucial role in protecting their society.
Keevan'
Dragons were created to fight Thread when it Fell because of the Red Star.
When a dragon rider dies, their dragon typically experiences profound grief and may enter a state of mourning, sometimes leading to self-destructive behavior or even death if the bond was particularly strong. In many fantasy lore, such as in the "Dragonriders of Pern" series, the dragon may also perish in a tragic event known as "the Last Flight." Additionally, the death of a rider can disrupt the balance of their dragon's emotional and mental state, affecting their connection to other dragons and riders in the community.
Unfortunately, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series has not been adapted into a TV series. You can, however, enjoy her books which are popular in the fantasy genre. You can purchase them at bookstores or online retailers.

In the Dragonriders of Pern series, it takes around a day or two for the dragons to mate after the mating flight. After mating, it takes about a week for the queen dragon to lay her eggs, and these eggs take around three to four months to hatch.
